Why Babies Cry

I have been doing myself a little field research. Here are my very thorough* and scientific** findings…

1. They are tired – be responsible and let them sleep won’t youbaby changing awards

2. They are not tired and you are trying to force rest – RUDE

3. They are bored – entertain ‘em for “crying” out loud

4. They have hit themselves in the face with the rattle that was supposed to entertain them

A guest post on the importance and upsides of imperfection, by Talya at Motherhood: The Real Deal

In today’s world, we have very high expectations of ourselves. We’re always shooting for the stars, obsessing about this, that or the other in that everything-has-to-be-just-so kinda way. Yet how many of us have uttered the words “there’s no such thing as perfect” time and time again?

It’s no wonder that when embarking on motherhood, so many women put such great amounts of pressure on themselves from the very outset, and as a result become a walking neurotic blob. After all, it’s probably the greatest challenge of our life so far, and we want to do it 100% right… right?

Mummy Spits the Dummy:

“Oh, how I wish I could go back to the days when I was a parenting expert. Before I had to live with actual children, I had all the answers to all the childrearing questions – even if nobody bothered to ASK me the questions, tsk! So much unsolicited advice and silent judgement. So many apologies I now owe to friends who had kids before I did.

Here is an abridged list of the Things I Would Never Do, Things I Would Never Let My Children Do, and Things I Outright Judged You For before my own children arrived.

It’s Alright That You Need Me

its alright that you need meMy little boy. I want to say this to you. It’s alright that you need me; needing is good, needing is natural. When you cry for me, when you wrap your arms around me, when you sigh because you feel happy in my arms; you’re behaving just as you should. You are finding out where you fit in this world, discovering all there is around you and learning how to feel safe.

You are young and new and so many things at the same time: brave and unsure, loud and quiet, shy and confident, content and needy. You are all of these things and that is alright.

All of This…is Motherhood

#ismotherhoodIt is early rising and midnight waking, it is wiping noses… and bums. It is the park all year round; it is play dough, sand and crayons. It is travelling heavy and never ‘nipping out’; it is laughter – so much laughter.

It is a shift in your relationship, it is rare evenings out, it is talking in yawns and gestures. It is discussing nappy rash, weaning and sippy cups – with gusto. It is toys in the living room, a prayer for more sleep, it is different than expected and more than you hoped.

About my yellow cup?
Posted by TracyBeaker
I have a yellow beaker that I have been using for about a year now. My parents fill it with water, they give it to me, I drink it. All very easy. However, I have recently decided that on Tuesday afternoons, every other Friday and any time it rains, I do NOT want to use the yellow beaker. In fact, I don’t even want to see it. I find it deeply troubling to have it in my view at all and if it’s used as a means of offering thirst relief, I have no choice but to scream, stamp my feet and yell incomprehensible words for several minutes, until…

A Good Example of Bad Co-sleeping

example cosleepingI have written about the reluctant co-sleeper before (I believe there are a number of us out there). If you co-sleep when you do not want to co-sleep, but your baby makes you co-sleep, then your night may go a little something like this. Although for your sake, I hope that it does not.

Dos and Don’ts For A Child Free Weekend

child free weekend
I recently enjoyed a weekend away sans my one-year-old son. When I say enjoyed, I of course missed my little boy a lot, but absolutely, totally made the most of having some time for me and a catch up with a good friend. It would have been a waste of everyone’s time and money if I’d spent the whole weekend pining. However, as a novice in the arena of child free mini-breaks, there are a few things I wish I had known before. So I’ve made this handy little tip sheet for anyone planning or pondering a weekend away, and also for next time I dabble in a mini escape. Not that I’ve thought about going away again so soon after my return.

The Healthy Parents’ Five-a-Day Rule

Hashtag - Healthy Choices

We all know the importance of a balanced and healthy diet and the impact this can have on a person’s wellbeing. Ensuring the inclusion of five-a-day in your diet is essential because; healthy body, healthy mind, yes? Then of course, as parents, it must be even more important to eat and drink the right kind of things to maximise our energy and health, because we can’t take sick days. Added to that the requirement to lead by example and have a positive influence on the diets of our children, it’s pretty clear that making the right choices and living within the rules when it comes to healthy eating is a no-brainer.
